Slice Shoppe, a new pizzeria in the Inner West, is set to open soon, following the success of Bexley’s Snack Shoppe, which launched in February. The new venue will feature New York-style pizza in a retro setting reminiscent of Pizza Hut.
Co-owner Sal Senan shared that Slice Shoppe has been a long-awaited project. “It’s a concept we’ve had in mind since we opened My Mother’s Cousin,” he told Broadsheet. The pizzeria will take over the former Barzaari location in Marrickville, which closed in early September after nearly ten years in business.
Senan partners with siblings Amani and Hussein Rachid in My Mother’s Cousin and Self Raised Bread Shoppe. After a recent trip to New York, the team felt inspired to pursue the Slice Shoppe vision. “We were like ‘We’re ready for it,’” Senan said.
Mohamad Matar, the head chef at My Mother’s Cousin, is leading the charge with a new dough recipe. “This time, we’re going full New York,” he said, mentioning 18-inch pizzas and deck ovens. “Slices, squares—it’s exciting.”
The team is personally renovating the new space, guided by Amani’s vision. The dining area will combine elements of retro Pizza Hut and classic New York pizzerias, featuring timber walls and upholstered booths separated by fluted glass. Meri Biscotto of August Create is handling branding, while Logan Thompson from Good Hand Sign Co is working on artwork and signage.
Recently, the team returned from an inspiring trip to New York, where they visited about 20 pizzerias. They highlighted L’Industrie, Mama’s, and Lucali as favorites. “We rented a car and drove three hours to New Haven, where we waited three hours for a pizza from Sally’s,” Senan recounted. “We love it, so it was easy.”
