A new quick-serve pizza restaurant has opened in Manchester city center, offering unique 10-inch rectangle slices. The restaurant, named Detroit Slims, is inspired by the American city of Detroit. It officially opened its doors on Saturday, October 12, and is located on Oxford Road in the Circle Square neighborhood.
Detroit Slims features a menu with a variety of pizza options, including classic Margherita and Pepperoni. It also offers creative choices like Cheeseburger and BBQ Meatz pizzas. Prices for the slices range from £5 to £9, and customers can expect their orders to be ready in under six minutes.
In addition to pizza, the restaurant serves chicken tenders, fries, and house-made dips, including hot honey and Dill + Jalapeño Ranch. Dessert options include shakes made with real Jersey milk and cream, available in flavors like banoffee, Oreo, salted butterscotch, and raspberry.
The pizzas are made with locally sourced ingredients and feature a dough that is fermented for 36 hours before baking. The slices are cooked in steel pans, giving them a focaccia-like crust reminiscent of traditional Detroit-style pizza. The venue also features an open box design that allows customers to view their pizza slices before serving.
The restaurant’s atmosphere is enhanced by a playlist featuring music from Detroit legends such as Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, and Smokey Robinson. The decor combines natural dark wood, bare brick, and painted murals, designed by Dan Mullen and Joel Wilkinson, who are also behind other local favorites like Ramona and Diecast.
Mullen expressed his excitement about the opening, saying, “It’s crazy to be at the point where we’re finally opening.” He emphasized the importance of quality, price, and speed in their service, aiming to create a welcoming atmosphere for customers.
Mullen’s favorite menu item is the Pepperoni Crown, topped with kimchi mayo and hot honey. He believes that Manchester has been waiting for a place like Detroit Slims, which offers high-quality food at an affordable price with quick service. The restaurant can prepare pizzas in less than six minutes, while competitors often take eight to 16 minutes.
Detroit Slims has plans for expansion, including a new location in the Trafford Centre and a delivery service. The team is working on a “Slims Room Service,” allowing customers within 150 meters to order pizza via phone or app for delivery in under 15 minutes, with a small delivery charge.
To celebrate its opening, Detroit Slims is giving away 10,000 free pizzas to those who sign up for their newsletter.
