Crust Pizza has responded after footage emerged showing pigeons eating toppings at its Neutral Bay location in Sydney. The video, filmed by a passer-by, captured three birds feasting on shredded cheese at the counter. No staff members were visible during the incident.
A Crust spokesperson explained that the store’s front door had been left open while an employee worked in the back kitchen. “The door was left open accidentally, and the pigeon just flew in straight away,” they said. They acknowledged that it was an unfortunate incident and stated that precautions have been put in place to prevent it from happening again.
Staff have been instructed to keep doors closed whenever possible and to ensure that topping containers are always covered with lids. The spokesperson also told Daily Mail Australia that “all appropriate operational procedures were immediately implemented” following the incident.
These measures included disposing of all food items, deep cleaning the affected area, conducting a full store clean, and arranging pest control. A comprehensive Food Standards Review was carried out, reinforcing best practices across the Crust network to avoid similar occurrences in the future.
The store has now installed an electrical bird deterrent device and is open for business, offering what they claim to be the most delicious pizzas on the market.
Reactions from customers have been mixed, with many expressing disgust at the sight of the pigeons eating food prepared for customers. Comments included, “Never eating Crust pizza again,” and “That’s my last Crust order, ever.”
However, some found humor in the situation, with one person writing, “Crust pizza … pigeon approved.”
