A pizza restaurant in Düsseldorf, Germany, was recently raided for allegedly serving cocaine alongside its pizzas.
The restaurant featured a menu item called Pizza 40. Its popularity stemmed not from its flavor, but because it came with a small packet of cocaine placed underneath each pizza.
Chief Inspector Michael Graf von Moltke reported that police began investigating the pizzeria in March after a routine food inspection revealed drugs in the kitchen. Narcotics investigators soon discovered that Pizza 40 was a customer favorite.
When police questioned the 36-year-old owner, he threw a bag of drugs out of a window. The bag landed in the hands of officers waiting outside. They recovered approximately three and a half pounds of cocaine, 400 grams of cannabis, and €268,000 in cash. Additionally, they found a handgun, an axe, long knives, and expensive watches.
After a brief release from custody, the owner reopened the restaurant and continued selling pizza. This led police to trace his drug sources.
The investigation uncovered a narcotics delivery scheme, resulting in searches of 16 locations across nine cities by 150 officers. Three suspects were arrested, and several caches of weapons were seized.
Prosecutor Laura Neumann stated that the group was believed to be purchasing large quantities of cocaine and cannabis for resale. They were also suspected of growing marijuana in their homes.
As of now, the pizza shop is closed.
