The wife of a Richmond police officer who recently passed away is honoring her husband’s memory.
Michael Lawing, 47, died on Sunday after a sudden illness. His wife, Caitlyn Lawing, spoke fondly of him.
“Everybody loved Michael. His passing was so unexpected,” said Caitlyn. “He was a wonderful officer, a wonderful person. He was incredibly smart and kind.”
Sgt. Michael Lawing served for 23 years on the Richmond police force and was a father to three children.
“Michael was the love of my life. Many people loved him and he impacted so many in a positive way,” Caitlyn said. “He was one of a kind—the best husband, father, and friend.”
Michael Lawing was dedicated to serving his community. According to a Facebook post from the Richmond Police Department, he also served as a Marine.
He played a key role in establishing the department’s first K-9 program and recently helped implement a body-worn camera system. In addition, he volunteered with the local fire district.
“Even though he was a giant, he was a gentle giant with a kind heart,” Caitlyn said. “If you have stories about him, please share them. We want his legacy to live on.”
In honor of Officer Lawing, Town Pizza in Richmond held a fundraiser where all proceeds from the day’s sales were donated to his family.
