A Milwaukee man has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide following a shooting incident at a pizza store that resulted in the death of a cashier.
Charles Leggett, 38, placed an order at the store on Saturday. The altercation began when Leggett noticed that the employee preparing his pizza was not wearing gloves, according to WISN.
Surveillance footage captured Leggett approaching the cashier, 26-year-old Jamil Owais, and engaging in a heated argument. Leggett later admitted to reaching over the counter and shooting Owais in the chest before fleeing the scene. Owais was pronounced dead at the location.
The employee who made the pizza that day stated he had been wearing gloves while preparing food. Jamil Owais immigrated to the United States in 2013, and his family owned the corner store where he was shot. He is survived by his wife and six-month-old daughter.
Mohammad Owais, Jamil’s older brother, was covering his shift that day while running errands. “When I came to the store, they told me, ‘Sorry for your loss.’ You know, it’s a big loss. He’s a good guy; he never hurt anybody. He’s friendly with all the neighborhood,” Mohammad told WISN.
Customers of the corner store expressed their devastation over the news, describing Jamil as a kind, funny, and generous individual.
Leggett, who is a convicted felon prohibited from possessing a firearm, is currently held on a $200,000 cash bond. If convicted, he could face up to 75 years in prison.
