Slice Brothers Pizza has closed its downtown St. Paul location, known as Slice Watch Bar. Founders Adam Kado and Hosie Thurmond opened this restaurant inside the Treasure Island Center in March, taking over from Red’s Savoy Pizza, which closed before the pandemic.

The closing announcement stated, “After being temporarily closed for the past two months, we have been in ongoing contract negotiations with the ownership. Unfortunately, despite our efforts to reach an agreement and address financial challenges, we have been unable to secure the necessary terms.”

In a Facebook post on October 21, the company pointed to rising downtown crime and “unprecedented economic conditions” as factors behind its difficulties. “We have a deep love for St. Paul and its community, and it saddens us to make this decision,” the post read. “We extend our best wishes to our fellow downtown businesses and hope to see the area thrive again in the future.”

The announcement coincided with reports that the Mall of America is suing Slice Brothers Pizza to evict the business from its location, which opened a year ago. The mall claims the pizzeria owes $111,000 in back rent.

Despite these challenges, Slice Brothers Pizza continues to operate its Mall of America location, as well as its other shops in northeast Minneapolis, the Midtown Global Market, and St. Paul’s Frogtown neighborhood.
