After 35 years of serving hearty Greek food, It’s Greek To Me, a beloved restaurant in Central Tacoma, will close its doors by December. The owners, Jim and Erin Wick, announced the closure but will continue to operate their food truck, Bomb Burger, which they launched earlier this year and is currently parked at Sixth and Fife.
The closure, however, brings good news for Tacoma. Balloon Roof Baking Co., known for its sourdough bread and laminated pastries, will take over the building at 1702 6th Ave. The bakery, led by Don and Emily Broyles, has gained a strong following at local farmers markets since 2022. The restaurant space will become the bakery’s new retail headquarters.
Jim Wick spoke about the closure in an interview, describing the decision as bittersweet. “I’m sad because people have all these great memories — I don’t want to let them down,” he said. “But it’s time for a change.”
While the restaurant will close, Wick is open to the idea of selling the It’s Greek To Me brand and recipes. For now, fans can look forward to some special appearances of the restaurant’s popular dishes, such as cheesy pan-style pizzas, chicken saganaki, spanakopita, and loaded gyros, at Bomb Burger.
The news of the closure was first shared on the restaurant’s Facebook page on November 2. The post, which included blue hearts and Greek flags, said the owners were “happy, yet sad to announce a new direction for our family business.” They added that “tired” was a fitting reason for the decision.
Wick mentioned that staff had already been informed of the closure, with some employees having worked at the restaurant for over 20 years. In the final weeks, the menu will be reduced, and the restaurant is expected to close around Thanksgiving. Balloon Roof Baking Co. will take possession of the building in the new year, with an attorney’s office currently occupying part of the space.
The announcement received more than 120 comments and 95 shares, with many customers expressing their love for the restaurant’s tzatziki sauce, gyros, fries, falafel, and pizzas.
