Cape Town’s Bardelli’s Restaurant has been named South Africa’s favourite pizza restaurant in the 2024 Porcupine Ridge Pizzeria Challenge. The Kenilworth-based eatery claimed the top spot after a remarkable comeback, following a fire that forced it to close for nine months last year. The restaurant used this time to rebuild and refurbish, leading to its victory this year.
A Focus on Consistency and Quality Ingredients
Owner Grant Hawkins expressed his delight over the win, noting that Bardelli’s success lies in its consistency, attention to detail, and the use of high-quality ingredients. The restaurant is known for its Roman-style pizza, featuring a thin, crispy base topped with premium mozzarella and the finest tomato pulp imported from Italy.
Cape Town’s Strong Showing
Another Cape Town establishment, Ferdinando’s Pizza in Observatory, secured second place in this year’s competition. Ferdinando’s had won the top spot in 2022. Oukraal Restaurant in Potchefstroom took third place.

Bardelli’s, which opened in 1992 as a small neighborhood eatery, has grown to become a local favorite. It moved up in the rankings over the years, from fourth place in 2021 to third in 2022, and now to first place. Hawkins has owned the restaurant for 17 years, continuing its legacy as a beloved spot in Cape Town.
